Smile – it’s National Poetry Day!

Today is National Poetry Day and it seems as good a time as any to start a poetry blog. So welcome to And a poem on the side, please. I hope you’ll enjoy your stay.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Vicki Watson and I’m a writer, publisher and book designer. I have the privilege of being able to spend my days playing with words and pictures and know of nothing better. I write all kinds of things for adults and for children, my most recent success being a children’s novel called Bob and the Alien Escapade.

This isn’t my first blog. I already have several others, including the blog I write for my business, Callisto Green, and others which I ghostwrite as part of my job. But this one will be a little different. Firstly, I’m not getting paid to write this. And secondly, this will be a blog devoted entirely to poetry.

You see, what not so many people know about me is that I also write poems. Always have, since I was a child. It’s not a big secret or anything, but just not something I usually share. Here’s what I intend to include:

  • Poems I’ve written myself.
  • Poems I’ve found recently by contemporary poets.
  • My favourite poems, both classical and contemporary.
  • Fascinating facts and debate about poets and poetry.
  • News and updates about the world of poetry today.
  • Poetry competitions, local readings, slams, festivals and so on.

I very much value any comments or suggestions from readers, so please do get involved by ‘liking’, ‘sharing’, ‘commenting’ and ‘rating’. And if you have any poems or poetry-related news you’d like to share on this blog, it would be great to hear from you too. More to follow on this.

Just a quick legal point: When I include my own poems on the site, they are my own work and I hold full copyright. If you want to use, share or distribute them in any way, please make sure that my name goes with them. And it would be great if you’d let me know when you’ve done this. Thanks.

Well, that’s it for now. If you pop back later today, I’ll have posted a couple of poems to get us started. Getting excited already!
